As the last day approaches for early voting in Texas on campus, as much as I live in the FAC, I have yet to see more than one black person standing in line waiting to vote. As I predicted, the closer that it got to being the deadline for early voting the line would look the way it does every summer when the incoming freshman try to register for classes at summer orientation. It was ridiculous. So why did I see only ONE brown face in the line? And even he was the white-washed type. People we have got to do better. As much as I can say that the people running for candidacy are full of gimmicks and lies, I still exercised my right to vote. Maybe you feel like it's only the primary so it's not important. Or maybe you feel like the electoral college is a bunch of B.S. (as I do) which means you probably know which way your state is voting anyway so your vote doesn't matter. Well technically you would be right and wrong. Our state is split almost 50/50 for Obama and Clinton, so voting is essential for our state. Learn the issues and evaluate the platforms.
Vote because a lot of people died gruesomely so that you could vote and not have to pay a poll tax. So that your voice could be heard. And if you don't vote for the people who died for your right, at least vote because you're happy Bush will no longer be in office.
They did not want us voting because they knew we wouldn't. Something I learned in my Theories of Persuasion class today was the scarcity tactic. When things are less available, we tend to want them more. When our freedom of something is less available, it becomes more attractive to us. It is more reasonable to have. That being said. The only thing that would get Blacks to actively vote is if their right to vote was taken away thus making them now appreciate it's value. This within itself is sad.
We've Got To Do Better
