"People have MBA's and doctorates but CANT find J-O-Bs"

I was browsing myspace when I ran across a page where someone had this as their headline. And it made me think because I am guilty of centering my life around what society has planned. I keep pressuring myself to go to good schools and major in something that is "valuable", when I know my passion is in music and fashion but in the back of my mind, I keep hearing this voice telling me that those industries don't make any money, especially here in Houston. When I think about it, it's sad because there are so many people who are limiting themselves, their creativity and their haven to satisfy the means of society or more importantly money. Over the past couple of months I've been in overdrive trying to figure out what I was going to do with the next three year of my life. I was killing my mind trying to figure out how I was going to get into Harvard and NYU but essentially I have to follow my heart and yea those are great schools, but i belong in an art school or music school..seriously. And while I do plan to get my MBA from one of these schools one day so that I can start a business, I'm going to Fashion Institute of Technology next fall and I am proud of my decision. Your salary is based on you knowledge, skill, dedication and hard work, not the Ph.D. behind your name. Many people in Houston have big houses and drive 745's and they may or may not even have a bachelor's degree. So it is solely dependent on the person. I am sad that it took me so long to figure this out and I am sad that society has bamboozled a lot of other people into thinking this way. And honestly, for the longest I had no idea what I was doing here at UT. I just knew it was a good school and that I would be guaranteed a good job once I graduated but that is so not true. So many people graduate from here and can not find jobs, they don't tell you in the brochure that it is dependent upon your major. But that's another story.

Happiness is the key to life and if you are not happy then what are you doing? Or better yet, who are you listening to?

I am so glad you have figured out a path that will deliver you peace and true prosperity. Prosperity means a successful, thriving, flourishing condition. Only YOU can define what will or won't help you prosper.

I'm glad you see that money, cars, and big homes - if acquired by means that don't excite your soul -only become your shackles. Until paid off, they shackle you to a job. If you're not "real", they shackle you to a false sense of self worth.

I can't wait to see your designs, or hear your music. I just want you to live authentically and be comfortable in your own skin. Be brave enough to bless the world with the best your talents have to offer.
